LBW – Questions you need to consider before making a decision

(in no particular order)

  • Was it a Fair delivery?
  • Where did the ball pitch? Outside off, in line or outside leg
  • Was the batsman playing a shot?
  • Would the ball have gone on to hit the stumps? Or was it too high or missing off/leg?
  • Was the 1st point of impact body/equipment, or was it bat/glove?
  • Was the batsman hit on the full?
  • Was the point of impact in line with the stumps?
  • How far forward was the batsman’s stance? Had you previously had communication from your partner at square regarding this?
  • Did the batsman come forward or back?
  • Was the bowler bowling over or around the wicket?
  • Where was the bowler’s point of release (ie straight above his head, or round arm?)
  • Previous recent experience re bounce, turn, seam, swing?

How long do you have to consider all these questions? ABOUT TWO SECONDS.
